»O žena, velika je tvoja vera! Zgodi naj se ti, kakor želiš!« In njena hči je ozdravela tisto uro (Mt 15,28).

Nekega svetlega nedeljskega jutra so vsi v mestu zgodaj vstali in odšli v lokalno cerkev. Preden se je začela maša, so meščani sedeli v klopeh in se pogovarjali o svojih življenjih in družinah.

Nenadoma se je v cerkvi pojavil satan. Vsi so začeli kričati in teči proti izhodu, pri tem pa so teptali drug drugega, da bi se izognili utelešenemu hudiču. Kmalu so bili vsi zunaj, razen starejše gospe, ki je mirno sedela v svoji klopi in se ni premikala, očitno se ni zavedala, da je satan v njeni navzočnosti.

To je Satana zmotilo, zato je pristopil k starejši gospe in ji rekel: "Ali ne veš, kdo sem?" Ženska je odgovorila: "Seveda vem." Satan je vprašal: "Ali se me ne bojiš?" "Prav nič," je rekla ženska. Satana je to vznemirilo in je vprašal: "Zakaj se me ne bojiš?" Ženska je mirno odgovorila: "Ker sem že oseminštirideset let poročena s tvojim bratom."

Še vedno v številnih kulturah po svetu dogodke ali izkušnje, za katere ni pripravljene razlage, pripisujejo zlim silam. Tako je bilo tudi v Jezusovem času. Bolezni, telesne deformacije, duševne bolezni, nesreče, slabe vremenske razmere in porazi v bitki so bili pripisani bodisi Božjemu maščevanju bodisi hudičevemu delovanju.

Sirsko-feničanska ženska meni, da je prekleta, ker ima hčerko, ki jo muči demon. Zelo malo verjetno je, da je njena hči obsedena s hudičem. Verjetno je imela kronično bolezen, ki je ni bilo mogoče ozdraviti. Poleg tega so jo drugi imeli za prekleto tudi zato, ker je poganka, ne-judinja. Pravzaprav je ta zgodba zaskrbljujoča in za Jezusa na več ravneh precej neugodna.

Zaradi njene narodnosti in vere učenci menijo, da od Jezusa ne bi smela ničesar zahtevati. Zdi se, da se Jezus z njimi strinja. Če ne bi bilo ženinega poguma in vztrajnosti, ne bi nikoli dobila, kar je želela. In ko Jezus govori o psičkih, se zdi, da se strinja s prezirom, ki so ga Judje gojili do poganov.

Tudi tokrat sta ženina bistrost in vera tisti, ki obrneta situacijo na bolje. Sprejme rasistično žaljivko in Jezusu odvrne da tudi psički lahko uživajo hrano, ki pade iz mize gospodarjev. Njena ponižnost in vztrajnost preseneti Jezusa in njena hči je ozdravljena, vsi pa dobijo lekcijo o tem, kako Božje kraljestvo raste na najbolj nenavadne načine.

Zgodba nam ponazori moč prosilne molitve. Žena ne gre skozi preizkušnjo zaradi sebe, ampak zaradi svoje hčerke. Njena vera v Jezusa je sredstvo, ki obogati življenje nekoga drugega. Kristjani mnogim, za katere vemo, da so v stiski, redno rečemo, da bomo zanje molili. Pogosto se ljudi, ki ne delijo naše vere, ta prijaznost še bolj dotakne.

Ko Boga prosimo, bodisi doma bodisi v prošnjah pri maši, so to lahko najlepši trenutki. Iz ženinih priprošenj se lahko veliko naučimo o tem kaj in kako naj mi sami prosimo v svoji župniji ali skupnosti. Za nekaj trenutkov pozabimo nase in na svoje potrebe ter prosimo za potrebe nekoga drugega, tudi če ga ne poznamo. Morda se zavemo tudi dejstva, da trenutno še vedno sedimo za polno mizo, večina svetovnega prebivalstva pa se mora zadovoljiti z ostanki. Prošnja za druge nas odpre vsem ljudem, da se upamo umazati in imeti vse ljudi za svoje brate in sestre.

"¡Oh esposa, grande es tu fe! Que te suceda lo que deseas". Y su hija quedó curada en aquella hora (Mt 15,28).

Un luminoso domingo por la mañana, todos en el pueblo se levantaron temprano y fueron a la iglesia local. Antes de comenzar la misa, los habitantes del pueblo se sentaron en los bancos y hablaron de sus vidas y de sus familias.

De repente, Satanás apareció en la iglesia. Todo el mundo empezó a gritar y a correr hacia la salida, pisoteándose unos a otros para evitar al diablo encarnado. Pronto todo el mundo estaba fuera, excepto una anciana que estaba sentada tranquilamente en su banco, sin moverse, aparentemente sin darse cuenta de que Satanás estaba en su presencia.

Esto molestó a Satanás, así que se acercó a la anciana y le dijo: "¿No sabes quién soy?". La mujer respondió: "Claro que lo sé". Satanás le preguntó: "¿No me tienes miedo?". "En absoluto", respondió la mujer. Satanás se turbó y preguntó: "¿Por qué no me tienes miedo?". La mujer respondió tranquilamente: "Porque llevo cuarenta y ocho años casada con tu hermano".

Sin embargo, en muchas culturas del mundo se atribuyen a fuerzas malignas sucesos o experiencias para los que no existe una explicación. Lo mismo ocurría en tiempos de Jesús. Las enfermedades, las deformidades físicas, las dolencias mentales, los accidentes, el mal tiempo y las derrotas en la batalla se atribuían a la venganza de Dios o a la obra del diablo.

Una mujer sirofenicia cree que está maldita porque tiene una hija atormentada por un demonio. Es muy poco probable que su hija esté poseída por el demonio. Probablemente tenía una enfermedad crónica que no se podía curar. Los demás también la consideraban maldita por ser una mujer pagana, no judía. De hecho, esta historia es inquietante y bastante incómoda para Jesús a muchos niveles.

Debido a su nacionalidad y a su religión, los discípulos creen que la mujer no debería haber exigido nada a Jesús. Jesús parece estar de acuerdo con ellos. Si no hubiera sido por el valor y la perseverancia de la mujer, nunca habría conseguido lo que quería. Y cuando Jesús habla de los cachorros, parece estar de acuerdo con el desprecio que los judíos sentían por los gentiles.

Una vez más, son la claridad y la fe de la mujer las que dan la vuelta a la situación. Acepta el insulto racista y replica a Jesús que incluso los cachorros pueden comer la comida que cae de la mesa de sus amos. Su humildad y perseverancia sorprenden a Jesús y su hija queda curada, y todos aprenden una lección sobre cómo el reino de Dios crece de las formas más extraordinarias.

La historia ilustra el poder de la oración. La mujer pasa por la prueba no por su propio bien, sino por el bien de su hija. Su fe en Jesús es el medio que enriquece la vida de otra persona. Los cristianos decimos a menudo a las personas necesitadas que rezaremos por ellas. A menudo, personas que no comparten nuestra fe se sienten aún más conmovidas por esta bondad.

Cuando pedimos a Dios, ya sea en casa o en peticiones en misa, pueden ser los momentos más hermosos. Podemos aprender mucho de las peticiones de la mujer sobre qué y cómo debemos pedir en nuestra parroquia o comunidad. Olvidémonos de nosotros mismos y de nuestras necesidades por unos momentos y pidamos por las necesidades de otra persona, aunque no la conozcamos. También podemos tomar conciencia del hecho de que en este momento seguimos sentados a una mesa llena, y la mayor parte de la población mundial tiene que conformarse con las sobras. Pedir por los demás nos abre a todas las personas, a atrevernos a ponernos manos a la obra y a considerar a todas las personas como nuestros hermanos y hermanas.

"O wife, great is your faith! May it happen to you as you wish!" And her daughter was healed that hour (Mt 15:28).

One bright Sunday morning, everyone in the town got up early and went to the local church. Before the service began, the townspeople sat in the pews and talked about their lives and families.

Suddenly, Satan appeared in the church. Everyone started shouting and running towards the exit, trampling on each other to avoid the devil incarnate. Soon everyone was outside, except for an elderly lady who was sitting quietly in her pew, not moving, apparently unaware that Satan was in her presence.

This disturbed Satan, so he approached the elderly lady and said to her, "Don't you know who I am?" The woman replied, "Of course I do." Satan asked, "Are you not afraid of me?" "Not at all," said the woman. Satan was disturbed by this and asked, "Why are you not afraid of me?" The woman calmly replied, "Because I have been married to your brother for forty-eight years."

Still, in many cultures around the world, events or experiences for which there is no ready explanation are attributed to evil forces. This was also the case in Jesus' day. Diseases, physical deformities, mental illness, accidents, bad weather, and defeats in battle were attributed either to God's vengeance or to the workings of the devil.

A Syro-Phoenician woman believes that she is cursed because she has a daughter who is tormented by a demon. It is highly unlikely that her daughter is possessed by the devil. She probably had a chronic illness that could not be cured. She was also considered cursed by others because she is a pagan, non-Jewish woman. In fact, this story is disturbing and quite uncomfortable for Jesus on many levels.

Because of her nationality and her religion, the disciples feel that she should not have demanded anything from Jesus. Jesus seems to agree with them. If it had not been for the woman's courage and perseverance, she would never have got what she wanted. And when Jesus speaks of puppies, he seems to be agreeing with the contempt that the Jews had for the Gentiles.

Once again, it is the woman's clarity and faith that turn the situation around. She accepts the racist insult and retorts to Jesus that even puppies can eat the food that falls from their masters' table. Her humility and perseverance amaze Jesus and her daughter is healed, and everyone learns a lesson about how God's kingdom grows in the most extraordinary ways.

The story illustrates the power of prayer. The woman goes through the trial not for her own sake, but for the sake of her daughter. Her faith in Jesus is the means that enriches someone else's life. Christians regularly tell many people we know are in need that we will pray for them. Often people who do not share our faith are touched even more by this kindness.

When we ask God, whether at home or in petitions at Mass, these can be the most beautiful moments. We can learn a lot from the woman's petitions about what and how we ourselves should ask in our own parish or community. Let us forget ourselves and our needs for a few moments and ask for the needs of someone else, even if we do not know them. We may also become aware of the fact that we are still sitting at a full table at the moment, and most of the world's population has to make do with leftovers. Asking for others opens us up to all people, to dare to get down and dirty and to consider all people as our brothers and sisters.
