Jezus je zagledal moža, imenovanega Matej, ki je sedél pri mitnici, in mu je rekel: »Hôdi za menoj!« (Mt 9,9).

Po ozdravitvi hromega, Jezus pokliče grešnika, ki je notranje hrom, naj hodi za njim in bo z njim, naj se od njega uči, kako biti človek in moški na Božji način. Tisti, ki mu življenje mine v preštevanju denarja je neskončno bolj hrom kakor pa telesno hromi. Matej pobira davke za poganskega okupatorja. Polomija od človeka in najbolj zaničevan moški. Takšne Jezus kliče, ne tistih, ki se imajo za pravične in boljše od samega Boga. Kliče nas s pogledom in z besedo, da bi nas ponovno ustvaril kot svoje sogovornike in sodelavce. Novo življenje je hoja za Njim, kar pomeni, biti sin/hči. Jezus tudi meni želi dati ta dar. Če gledam v Jezusa vstanem in grem za njim, če ne pa iščem izgovore, da nisem vreden in dovolj dober, ali pa se smatram za preveč dobrega in sposobnega, da bi čas tratil za Jezusa in njegovo dobro ali veselo novico evangelija. Ko odgovorim na Jezusov klic preidem iz smrti v življenje. Bog mi končno lahko vrne moje sinovsko dostojanstvo.

Jesus saw a man called Matthew sitting at the publican's table and said to him, "Follow me" (Matthew 9:9).

After healing the lame man, Jesus calls the sinner who is inwardly lame to follow him and be with him, to learn from him how to be a man and a man after God's manner. The one whose life is spent in counting money is infinitely more lame than the physically lame. Matthew collects taxes for a pagan occupier. A failure of a man and a most despised man. Such are the ones Jesus calls, not those who think themselves righteous and better than God Himself. He calls us with a look and a word to recreate us as his interlocutors and co-workers. The new life is walking after Him, which means being a son/daughter. Jesus also wants to give me this gift. If I look to Jesus I get up and follow Him, if not I look for excuses that I am not worthy or good enough, or I consider myself too good and capable to waste time on Jesus and His good news or the good news of the Gospel. When I answer Jesus' call I pass from death to life. God can finally restore me to my filial dignity.
